Balsam Noël evokes the singular scent memory of just-crushed fir needles.

The evergreen fronds emit a fresh burst of volatile terpenes.

An unmistakeable jammy, cooked-fruit sweetness pervades the air, mingling with a bracing camphoraceous pine note.

The drydown expresses the haylike, soft warmth of the tree’s heartwood, sticky with resinous saps, grounded in meditative cedarwood.

Inspiration

Around Christmastime in New York City, Christmas tree popup shops sprout up. The scent of these “Christmas tree forests” greets you from even a city block away. Merchants sell tiny wreaths, majestic 12-foot trees, and Balsam, Douglas, and Fraser Firs from Nova Scotia and Vermont.

Balsam Noël's point of departure is the solifleur tradition of perfumes that idealize the scent of a single flower, like the rose. We made an unexpected move in celebrating an iconic tree, rather than a bloom.

The Balsam Fir, Abies balsamea, is native to the northeast of the North American continent. It is revered as a Christmas tree for its lovely, sweet-fresh scent and for the emerald brilliance of its soft needles.
